Homepages are the first thing we see when we open our browser.
Our browser is a place where we spend our time on the web talking with our friends and family, doing homework, and entertaining yourself with YouTube, College Humor, and many other sites.
But, what we end up doing is keeping our homepage on default. Default in that we did not change our homepage from what was preset when you installed your browser.
By not keeping your homepage as the default, you can help yourself out and really save time from going to the same place all the time. Let the analysis begin.
Let Your Homepage Define Your Usability
When you first load up your browser (the web) what page do you find yourself going to first or going to the most throughout your time on the web?
Where ever this place is you will want to make it your homepage. We tend to just type in the website or visit a bookmark all the time. But, why strain your fingers and clog your bookmarks bar when you could just make it your home page and click on the cute house button.
Think about when you go to other places, not your personal computer, and open up their homepage. If you are at a certain business it will have their business homepage or when you are on a college computer it will have the college homepage. This is all because when we go to these certain destinations we will find ourselves probably going to these already made homepages.
Now, think about your number one or two use for the web.
I see many students that have the start page for Apple, because they are using Safari on their new Mac. I also see students that have a search engine site like Google as their homepage. If you do find yourself always using Apple or Google by any means please continue to use them as your homepage.
But, I found out that I got more out of my homepage by setting something I need to use more, which is a site called TeuxDeux that keeps me organized with all the tasks I need to complete.
Be Sure Your Homepage Has a Purpose
I have a homepage that allows me to use it all the time and when I first open the web it forces me to look at it. Either way the homepage I have set has a purpose. Does yours?
Most of us set a homepage just to have it as a homepage and usually navigate from it as soon as we get to it (open up our browser).
How can we limit this?
We change our homepage to one that has more purpose. Google has made it easy to get everything you want in one place (your homepage) with iGoogle. There are many other sites we can think about that we first use a lot and also serve a purpose to have as our homepage.
As I said before my homepage is a tool that keeps all my tasks organized. Yes, I’m a nerd in terms of trying to stay organized. But, that homepage has a purpose. I know we normally do not put that much thought into deciding our true homepage and if it serves a real purpose to us. If we do pay attention to it though we can improve our time spent on the web and actually get something out of it by having it setup for our needs.
The LifeNotion: There is a homepage for a reason. Don’t neglect its potential to serve your needs and be useful for you when on the web.

What homepage do you have set on your browser? Have you ever given it any thought to why you have that as your homepage?
If you do have a homepage that is not default and has an actual purpose for you explain it and how it helps you.

Actually the Chrome Homepage/New Tab page is really useful, it has a 8 'slot' thumbnail grid of your most visited sites. This can be overwritten by pinning a site in place, and you can even drag and drop them around. It's rather spiffy.
I currently have Chrome and use this feature since its default for opening a new tab but not homepage for me.
I know many other browsers have plugins or features that allow you to display the top sites as your homepage. This is certainly a good alternative to the default homepage. But, only if it serves a purpose and is useful for you.
I use Firefox's ability to have several webpages as my homepage. When I start my browser I have 3 tabs open up so that I can quickly and effectively start taking care of business.
That is another great feature offered by a browser to allow for multiple favorite sites to be displayed promptly. Some will say why do that when I already know what to go to all the time?
But, you really do save the time and 'hassle' of always loading up the same pages, plus sometimes I might forget to check a certain site or page that I need to really check daily or often.
"Cute little house" HAHAHA! that was funny
I agree with this post… and I should probably consider doing it, since I'm one of those that goes through a routine of typing in the addresses and such. but yeah… Super tip! I'd never really thought about it before
Not many people think about it because either they do not use the internet a lot or are unaware of features that are in front of their eyes and how they can use them to their fullest.
If you think about the 'cute little house' I think have a home invites me to always return there when I need to. But, sometimes we need to force ourselves so that is why having a custom homepage and using other features that Nick and Brandon have highlighted above to make sure the pages you need to be checking or are checking all the time are right in front of your face.
I have and think I forever will have afl.com.au as my homepage. I'm a big AFL sports nut!! I can't help it. Must read all the latest of what's going on with my team – even if it's in the offseason. I can't even remember the last time my homepage changed. If I get a new browser or reinstall it, I change it back to AFL.com.au asap
Hehe, I guess that's something you didn't know about me. All you hear is about 'beginner blogger'. Well if you click on my name from this comment you'll see another blog of mine
