Reflection is a word that, in terms of mind and thought, is very powerful in figuring yourself out.
But, many of us go through troubles of not being able to allow time for this reflection.
Why? In college, we are presented with many opportunities to experience and gain interest from. You get involved in these opportunies because either your friends have told you about them or they struck your interest.
On top of experiencing all the opportunities in college, students have academic work and another job to pay for expenses.
Throughout all of this taken time, do you ever leave sometime for reflection?
Reflection offers you the opportunity to think about the following questions:
Can you imagine yourself practicing your current studies?
Coming to college we strive to think of what we want to study as the first thing to do.
Many times we pick a study or major that we have thought about during high school or that our parents or other influential people in our life have recommended. As a freshman, is when we find out if we pass or fail in that major (both grades and mental want).
When failing a certain study or major, reflection happens automatically. But, what happens when you end up passing it?
You could just be a natural in that field, but it does not necessarily when you will be happy doing that in the feature. Many students who have graduated from college take their first job usually related to their study, but over time your interests change and then you want to be doing something different. So, don’t start off not wanting to do what you want to do once you graduate.
When passing, force reflection.
When exploring new opportunities, what is the overall outcome of them?
Reflection can easily occur when you explore and try new things throughout college.
Clubs, organizations, officer positions in your place of residence, and working with professors outside of class are all opportunities to pick up.
When getting and being in them, what feeling do you get? Do you feel you should be doing something different with your life or focusing on other things that will be of more importance to you?
Many times it is neither and we really get confused to why we are in the certain role. But, when in the role we need to reflect on the interests, self-gain, and overall feeling we are feeling. This feeling will determine the overall outcome.
Please note that you need to always explore other opportunities to keep the reflection going and working effectively.
Are you limiting yourself?
Limiting yourself, in terms of time for reflection, can bring forth many ‘problems’.
If you always working, studying, and being involved in many clubs and organizations you are limiting the amount of time where you can sit down, relax, and allow for deep reflection.
We can allow for this deep reflection by doing calm activities, socializing with friends and family about your experiences and thoughts with the opportunities, and not limiting the time for your reflection.

Reflection is a really important skills for life that you need to develop. You need to be fully aware of your thoughts and feelings so you can make the best of future opportunities.
Too many people go through life not thinking about what they are doing and how it effects them and their future simply because that’s what is apparently expected of them. Self reflection is a great way to combat this.
Great post Derek
Many times we do not reflect because we are scared if the outcome means that we have to change what we are currently doing. So we just ignore the true feelings and continue on with ‘life’.
